The race for the upcoming leadership selection of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) International Coordination Council (ICC) is intensifying. The Nepali community scattered across the world has begun to show keen interest in NRNA’s next leadership. In this election atmosphere, two influential, visionary, and dedicated young leaders—Robin Sherchan and Prabin Gurung—are emerging at the forefront.
These two figures are not merely contenders for positions; they are results-oriented planners, inclusive leaders, and men capable of presenting the voice of the Nepali diaspora powerfully on the international stage. This report analyzes their personal capabilities, contributions, cooperation, and potential roles.
1. Robin Sherchan: The Definition of Composure, Stability, and Strategic Leadership
Currently serving as NRNA ICC Senior Vice President, Robin Sherchan is an established businessman in Japan, a strong federal leader, and a calm personality who believes in institutional stability.
▪︎ Leadership in Strengthening the Organization
During his tenure, NRNA Japan has become significantly stronger. He has consistently been at the forefront in preserving Nepali language and culture, solving labor issues, supporting students, and coordinating with local Japanese bodies.
Within the International Coordination Council, he has fostered trust by using dialogue and coordination as tools for resolving challenges.
▪︎ Long-term Vision for Nepal and Nepalis
His leadership style is results-oriented, coordinated, and grounded in stability. Focusing not on power displays but on policies and solutions, he has given first priority to the rights and interests of Nepalis abroad.
Through dialogue with the government, parliament, and policymakers, he has played a strong role in shaping policies for the diaspora.
▪︎ Business Success with Social Commitment
In Japan, he has succeeded in hotel, restaurant, and import-export businesses. Beyond this, he has created employment opportunities for Nepalis and has always stepped forward to rescue and support them in times of crisis.
His outlook is not merely business-driven—it is guided by a humanistic approach rooted in social responsibility.
2. Prabin Gurung: A Blend of Service, Crisis Management, and Determination
A businessman established in Qatar, social activist, and emerging young leader of NRNA, Pravin Gurung is preparing to contest in the upcoming general convention. Although he has yet to officially announce the specific position he will run for, his activeness and influence have already made him a strong contender.
▪︎ Historic Leadership During the COVID Crisis
As NRNA Middle East Regional Coordinator during the frightening COVID-19 pandemic, Prabin Gurung was on the frontlines. He provided food, shelter, and clothing for stranded Nepalis, showing true humanitarian leadership.
Coordinating with embassies, the Government of Nepal, and Nepal Airlines, he helped thousands of Nepalis return home—an effort recognized as the largest and most effective repatriation mission in the Middle East, led by him.
Additionally, he spearheaded the distribution of over 500 oxygen cylinders to various hospitals during the health crisis.
▪︎ Clear Mandate as Deputy General Secretary
In the open general convention held at Solti Hotel, Kathmandu, Prabin Gurung was elected Deputy General Secretary with a historic vote margin. This victory was not just about winning a position—it was recognition of his leadership style and dedication.
▪︎ Social Perspective and Long-term Thinking
His business in Qatar is not purely profit-driven—it is based on social responsibility. Actively contributing to health, education, skill development, and job creation, he has worked to establish NRNA as a service-oriented organization.
3. A Strong Equation of Cooperation: Robin Sherchan and Prabin Gurung
The relationship between these two figures is not just friendship—it is cooperation tested in times of crisis, within the organization, and through shared dedication.
▪︎ Coordination in the Previous Term
During their previous term—Prabin as Deputy General Secretary and Robin as Senior Vice President—they displayed notable cooperation. They became instruments of dialogue in policy-making, problem-solving, and navigating difficult situations within the association.
▪︎ A Possible Combination: President and General Secretary/Vice President
There is currently a growing perception within the organization—if Robin Sherchan contests for President, Prabin Gurung could take on the role of General Secretary or Vice President.
This combination could bring institutional transparency, efficiency, and responsible leadership to the organization.
▪︎ A Unifying Vision
NRNA has in the past been plagued by factionalism and internal disputes. However, both Pravin and Robin have consistently called for cooperation, inclusivity, and unity within the organization. Their vision is a rare example of leadership that values dialogue and consensus.
4. New Possibilities in Diaspora–Nepal Relations
These two leaders view the Nepali diaspora not just through an emotional bond, but also from a perspective of professional, social, and political transformation.
▪︎ Investment, Employment, and Knowledge Transfer
They believe the formula for both Nepal’s prosperity and diaspora empowerment lies in parallel development. Their priorities include providing policy recommendations to the government, building partnerships with the private sector, promoting youth entrepreneurship, and facilitating technology transfer.
▪︎ Inspirational Figures for the Youth
The new generation of the Nepali diaspora no longer seeks emotional slogans—it demands result-oriented leadership. Robin and Prabin are ideal examples of modern thinking, practical planning, and commitment.
If they assume leadership, they could serve as inspirations and mentors for future Nepali youth.
5. Conclusion: Co-travelers in NRNA’s New Journey
The Non-Resident Nepali Association now stands at a turning point. At this stage, leadership that ensures stability, efficiency, transparency, and accountability is essential.
Robin Sherchan and Prabin Gurung are the very embodiments of such leadership—leaders capable of ushering the organization into a new era.
If this duo comes to the helm:
- Factionalism will end,
- Decision-making will be dynamic, and
- NRNA will become the common power center for all Nepalis abroad.
Special Note:
If Robin Sherchan and Prabin Gurung decide to contest the general convention with a shared commitment, it will not merely be an electoral process—it will be the beginning of NRNA’s renaissance journey.
